Let parents who can afford fees pay - Nii Arday Clegg on Free SHS

Renowned media personality, Robert Nii Arday Clegg has advocated for the scrapping of the Free SHS education system introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

He argues that some guardians must be left to their own fate of footing the bills of their wards as they can afford the cost.

“If some people can afford the fees let them pay it. We should do a means test, not everybody should get it for free,” he said.

According to him, the government will be better off taking care of brilliant but needy students in the country by offering them scholarships rather than making the system absolutely free for those who have the means to fulfil financial requirements.

“…there are many people who are bright so help them, the nation owes them a duty but me I don’t think the state should pay for my children’s education to come Achimota school. That’s my issue with Free SHS, it’s not political, it’s thinking, finance, money and the nation,” he stressed.

The private legal practitioner bemoaned that, failure on the part of political leaders to implement solid educational policies over the years has contributed to some of the enormous problems the country is faced with.

Speaking in an interview with www.ghanaweb.com, he described the current system as a failure while calling for the abrogated O and A Level to be reintroduced.

To him, the leaders who have been appointed into positions have failed to portray visionary qualities in devising ways to address the country’s challenges, instead they occupy those spots only to enrich themselves while impoverishing the electorates.

“People should be able to say, cars are coming in at this rate, the population is growing at that rate, etc. and we are focusing that nine years down the road etc.… What happened to all those leaders? Are they really leaders? People are just leaders for the sake if you like, of filling a position,” he maintained.

Nii Arday Clegg added, “I want to see people who lead because they solve our problems that’s what they do out there, we can do it too, so that’s my biggest problem, change. Educational levels and standards is a problem.”

Central University to sack over 200 staff in latest revelation

More than 200 staff of the Central University College are expected to be laid off according to the Registrar of the institution owned by the International Central Gospel Church, Mr. Emil Afenyo.

In a voice recording, while addressing 67 persons including Junior and Senior staff who were recently sacked following claims by management it is implementing a staff rationalization exercise to reduce the wage bill and improve efficiencies in customer support, service delivery and administrative excellence, the Registrar is heard lamenting about the poor finances of the institution.

“In that document, the mandate they have given us is to reduce the staff cost by 40%. We have approximately 500 staff. So if you’re going to reduce the cost by 40%, you can imagine the number of staff that must be laid off”, he revealed.

“What we did over the last year was to try to negotiate it as much as possible to see if we could reassign people with the hope that the university numbers would expand then it will not be necessary for people to be laid off. So you see that last year twice we did quite a major set of the reassignments. It has helped only to an extent. As I am speaking our staff cost is still 2.7 million cedis and for the past 10 months, we have been running only on overdrafts.

So meeting with the council (University Council) again in December they made it clear that whatever leeway we’ve been asking for we can’t have it, we need to finish up on this matter. So a committee was set up to review how we would approach the matter. And the bottom line is that you are among probably the 2nd or 3rd batch of people who the university is going to let go off. It is not over. All drivers will ultimately be gone because that’s the position of the operational document”.

But the about 67 staff who were recently sacked via text messages claimed they have served the university faithfully with all their toil for between 10 to 20 years have refused to sign the severance agreement prepared by the university.

They have engaged the services of a law firm who have pointed out the illegality of the whole redundancy process to the university management.

The illegality bothers on section 65 of Act 651 (Labour Act), which prescribes that, amongst other things, the severance pay is supposed to be negotiated between the affected employees on one hand and the employer on the other hand.

The affected staff are asking to be paid 3 months Gross Salary (Basic Salary, Rent allowance plus Transport Allowance) for each year worked as the layoff is sudden and would adversely affect the quality of their life. Management also deliberately came out with new regulations canceling all accumulated leave of staff members in December 2017 on the declare staff redundant in January 2018.
According to them, their layoff is as an attempt to deny them payment for their accumulated leave.

OVER 150 FRESH STUDENTS OF ST. LOUIS SHS STUDY UNDER TREES

Due to inadequate infrastructure, about one hundred and fifty fresh students of St. Louis Senior High School in Kumasi are currently studying under trees.

This came into light when some media persons visited the school on Monday morning to find out with first year students had started classes.

The visit revealed that three classes were having their lessons under trees and five of them were using uncompleted assembly hall which was started in the year 2007 as their class rooms.

It was noted that the school had only seven official classrooms which had already occupied by some of the first year classes.

It was also gathered that about half of the first year students were using newly constructed Science Laboratory and ironing shed as temporally dormitory.

It was observed that the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the school was constructing 12 Unit classroom storey building and the 2 Unit dormitory storey building which was started in the year2007 by the government of Ghana under the Get-fund projects was still under construction.

It was also observed that as a result of the high students’ population increased the authorities had strategized to ration the use of the dining hall which had affected the teaching and learning process.

The dining hall which was built over fifty years ago for 16 students as beginners is now used for over 2200 students currently.

The source at the school explained that the contractors were in a hurry to complete the projects before the first year students would report but the projects were far from completion.

The source also indicated that even if the construction works are completed the school might have needed additional two storey classroom blocks to reduce congestion in the various class rooms.

Notwithstanding the challenges, the government has supplied the school with number of mental beds and some student desks.

When the school authorities were contacted they declined to comment and were tight-lipped.
